On April 3 the Italian frigate Luigi Rizzo, engaged in the waters of the Gulf of Guinea, received notice of a pirate attack against the merchant Arch Gabriel, and took action to stop the pirates from continuing their activity.

Upon notice, the frigate set sail for the event area and sent one of its helicopters with personnel specialized in safety and boarding activities.

During 29 March – 4 April 22, two incidents (one CAT 31 incident and one CAT 42 incident) of armed robbery against ships in Asia.

The CAT 3 incident occurred to a ship while anchored at Belawan Anchorage, Indonesia; and the CAT 4 incident occurred to a ship while anchored at Batangas Anchorage, the Philippines.

The CAT 3 incident occurred on 24 Mar to a bulk carrier while anchored at Belawan Anchorage, Indonesia. Three perpetrators armed with long knives and a steel bar were sighted at the forecastle.

Somalia has launched a high-tech maritime facility for the police to boost security along the coastline as the country continues to expand its blue economy.

According to Xinhua, UN Secretary-General’s deputy special representative for Somalia, Anita Kiki Gbeho said the facility will provide an operational base from which the Somalia Police Force (SPF) can operate around Mogadishu Port and the Somali coastline, as well as help build a long-term maritime law enforcement capacity.

In recent years Somalia has expanded its maritime law enforcement capability, allowing the SPF to deliver safety and security around Mogadishu Port and along Somalia’s coastline. This furnished and equipped base will allow the SPF to become increasingly more effective

Concerns about China’s maritime assertiveness have led to a steady strategic collaboration between Japan and the Philippines.

More specifically, the two countries agreed to bolster security cooperation and expand joint military drills to counter China’s maritime assertiveness, according to their defence ministers.

Namely, during a meeting in Tokyo, defence Minister Kishi Nobuo and his Philippine counterpart, Delfin Lorenzana, reaffirmed the importance of maintaining and strengthening a “free and open Indo-Pacific,” and said that attempts to change the status quo by force were “unacceptable.”
